EVICTION

2023 | Berlin

Every year millions of people all around the world are evicted from their homes by forces of state and capital. At the same time, conflicts about public space are intensifying. People stand up for their human right for housing. Eviction is a staging of the critical moment in which a group of people refuses to evacuate a building and a trained unit is deployed to evict them. This encounter symbolises the violence inherent to land ownership and territoriality, and encapsulates layers upon layers of injustice, oppression, rage, pain, and indifference.

A large audience finds itself on the street, next to a building facade, engrossed in a battle scene on a 1:1 scale. The action is composed of group formations, brutal physical encounters, aerial choreography, documentary audio, pop music, live video coverage and scenographic elements made out of construction waste and protest materials.

Eviction both re-enacts and pre-enacts practices of protest and resistance, moving on the spectrum between the aesthetic and the political, the spectacular and the useful, the documentary and the forthcoming.

Supported by the NATIONAL PERFORMANCE NETWORK - STEPPING OUT, funded by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media as part of the initiative NEUSTART KULTUR. Support Program Dance. The mediation programme was supported by the Federal Agency for Civic Education. Eviction premiered at the Israel Festival 2022.
