This is an Intervention! was a one-day festival for artistic interventions by thirty local and international artists in the public space of Berlin-Kreuzberg. It reflected the critical moment after the first lockdown was lifted and intervened in the reoccupation of the public space after a long period of isolation. The event was conceptualised as a collective pause. It questioned the rush back to “normality”, which was reflected in the renewed activation of the public realm, and commented on the structural global inequality and the overall unsustainability of the capitalist system exposed by the virus.
The all-day discursive programme was broadcasted by Cashmere Radio. The festival was followed up by a screening of short movies and videos created during lockdown by artists from all around the world. These “Pandemic Films” offered a glimpse into the realities in other cities and countries during the pandemic, and reflected the creative shift in artistic production while in isolation. One year after the first lockdown, in April 2021, the project was published in the #9 edition of Free Berlin – Errant Bodies Press, in the shape of an eight-page printed intervention.
This is an Intervention! came into being through a collaboration between CCPA, B_Tour and Kap Hoorn, and would not have been possible without the generous efforts of all participating artists, curators, guides and volunteers involved. The “Pandemic Films” programme was kindly hosted by Atelierhof Kreuzberg.
